Foscil & Specs One - Discuss The Benefits Of Said Collaboration EP

Back with this EP that's already 10 years old although I discovered it recently.
It's a 100% northwest collaboration, all artists being from Seattle: on one hand Specs One, the MC, on the other hand a live band called Foscil. Bands playing instrumental hip hop is not usually my cup of tea, but I must say their sound is pretty slick, and they avoid the usual traps of such bands' music.
For example "Crunch Day" is based on a nice sample flipped a la J-Zone.
Give it a try, it's a pleasant surprise and the vinyl is pretty easy to get your hands on at a cheap price.

DJ Fuse One - Metamorphosis

This mix-cd is on my top 10 favourite rap mixtapes ever.
It was release in 2002 and it's a perfect example of what a mixtape should be: great selection (here rap but also fine breaks), technical skills, some playful cut-ups (the bit about DJ Shadow's samples starting track 11 is simply classic) and a cohesive feel.
Everything here was meticulously cooked and arranged, and, like some of the Buddy Peace mixes, it pushes the 'mixtape game' to a delicious level of rap nerdery (still, even if you don't get everything at first hear, you can still enjoy it).
Listen and enjoy. And if you liked it, cope his second one, "Irregular I", released on Epitome Of Fresh.

Private School - Penrose EP

I always loved SF's Private School. Their minimalist sound is somewhat miraculous to me. They're like 180 degrees from the current hype type rap and thank god, they couldn't care less and keep on developping their quiet, soft spoken style years after years.
If you're not familiar with their previous albums and enjoy their new free EP Penrose like I did, please check them you'll be rewarded. They got plenty of solo and side projects as well.
Long live the Private School.

Howard Lloyd - The Quickie EP

It's been a long time since we offered something from the east coast.
I chose this rather confidential EP because I just recently bought a copy of the vinyl version.
It's from 2006 (precisely the year when lots of "indie rap heads" started to get bored of the scene, and probably rightly so) and it's pretty decent. There's 2 tracks I particularly like, -and by that I mean 'I particularly like the beat': "U Don't Want It" and "Throwbacks".
This last one is only on the vinyl version though. The link I offer got the full CD version tracks plus that bonus vinyl track.

Socialistik - Float To It 12''

This excellent '96 12'' single is by Sacramento's Socialistik.
I first heard it on japanese DJ S-Ky The Cookinjax' great "Represent Underground" mix-cd a few years ago.
The instrumental is a somewhat bite (?) of DJ Cam's "Sang Lien" from his 95 Underground Vibes album. Love the hipnotic vibe.
Not sure if it's really rare, copies over discogs are expensive but there's still cheap copies floating on the web from time to time.

Hobo Junction - Secret Service (Demo Tape)

This tape has been floating on the web for some time, not sure if it's from the Ghetto Tyylit guys or else. There's also a rip on youtube with the Limited Edition artwork (no relation though).
So, no real artwork nor official tracklist exist to my knowledge but I've been able to figure some of the tracks in there. Some are demo version of later-released tracks from the Hobos, some are just unreleased. Any additional info would help, don't hesitate to hit the comment section.
Beware, the audio quality is like a 8th generation cassette dub.

Izm Da Mad Soul - S/T

Don't know much about Izm to be honest, apart the fact that he appears to be from Riverside, CA.
He released this album in 2000 (cassette only?), made a couple appearances on wax (the nice It's Yours/ Illusiv 12'' and the Mo'Budded Phat Jointz EP compilation) and that's basically it.
For a westcoast MC his taste in productions is closer to say, a Zest or Third Sight than your common Californian MC: dark, cold and minimal vibe here.

Bay Area Art Collective - Keep Your Day Job / We're BAAC

Following my previous post about B-Sides Demonstrations, here's BAAC albums number 2 and 3 thanks to Jack from the great BTBB and Razoo Zo. I looked for these albums forever and they gracisously helped me, so props to them.
Keep Your Day Job is from 1997 and We're BAAC from 1998. They were both initially released only as cassettes then pressed on one double cd in 98.

BoxFeedrs - Millenium Soup EP

Rapwise, San Diego rarely disappoint (at least from what I know from this scene).
Here's another example of a great SD connection with this short-lived group named BoxFeedrs which consist of rapper Sergio Hernandez aka Surge or Splurgeo (check out his other EPs, worth the while), X0, Cal86 and the cherry on the cake, the awesome MRR on production (of MHE/MRR-ADM/Dirty Drums/Drumetrics fame -aka the best band you never heard of).

The result is amazing: the agressive raps complement perfectly the dark and in-your-face beats of MRR (you recognize some beats heard on such and such MHE comps). It's a short one but no weak track, everything is perfectly on point and when it's over you just want to press repeat again and again.

A very underrated one in my book.

Anonymous - Instrumentals At Work

Another one for the hardcore la2thebay/ Log Cabin collectors.
This is Log Cabin's producer Neosapien under the Anonymous moniker (also aka AntiMC from Mush Records). It's his very first solo release from 1999 on cassette only, and like the title says, it's a compilation of instrumentals. Never saw this around either.

I bought the cassette a few years ago from a guy who had a large westcoast underground cassette collection for sale and who systematically offered a nice cd transfer of the tape you bought from him, with hand-made cd artwork and tracklist in different colors paper case. Now that's dedication. I don't know if he's still around making these, but props to him. I have a few others like that from him, will see which one I'll share eventually.

The last beat on this called Soldier In The Rain is used by Of Mexican Descent on a live version of Money Is Meaningless (maybe it's on the Awol One / 2Mex Flow & Tell Tour CD, don't remember exactly).

Ceebrolistics - Spring

Another short one today: a 5-track EP from finnish rappers Ceebrolistics.
This is from 1995, was only released on cassette and is now worth a good pile of euros.
It's also the Cee's very first release it seems.

Although I really like their A Day Of The People In Between LP too, in the same vein (obvious influences of westcoast underground, but for the best) I always come back to that EP for the quality of the production. I really like the fresh, light hearted vibe in here and the great use of samples. Definitely something you'd bump for spring!
The only drawback is the low quality of the rip: you need to push the volume a little bit.

I really hope somebody will make a vinyl release out of this (err... I mean... Out of the original DAT/reel/whatever).

P.E.A.C.E. & Daddy Kev - The Green Mile

Gnou just posted a link to this album on the FakeForReal forum. It's the long-awaited album (10 years or something!) from Freestyle Fellowship's PEACE entirely produced by Daddy Kev and featuring his cousin Kits and Awol.

Until today it was just a 11-minute sampler from Kev's Penchant For Buggery DVD, and it's now a... 11 minutes EP with track names and slightly different arrangements... At least this mp3 release is for free on RapAmazon I guess.

I really hope some label will put this on vinyl though... It's worth the wait! Nice jazzy vibe kind of reminiscent from Grouch & Kev's Sound Advice. Peep it.

Mystery School - Manwerk EP / Timewerk 7'' / Interview

Pretty mysterious indeed. I don't remember exactly how I stumble on those guys, but chances are by buying randomly their first EP through accesshiphop -in a time when I bought anything that seemed vaguely new and exciting on there.

During the time of that first release era I did the only existing interview (in my knowledge anyways) of one of their member, producer Ruggedryhump. It was in 2003 and that was for the now-defunct french site WestCoastIndies (big up Jeantu, big up Aka, etc.).

The interview is not exactly of a great help if you want to reveal the whole Mystery thing: not sure who they really are, where they really from (many hints point toward California though, lots of La2thebay connections), what they look like... Hell giving the pile of cryptic talks they might as well be an obscure Circus side-project for what I know.

They made the Manwerk EP in 2002, the Timewerk 7'' in 2004, a couple of less interesting side-releases and that was pretty much it.
Members/collaborators can be spotted on the Infidelity Project compilation also.

I'm not even sure those records have ever been ripped.. Anyways here's a rip of my EP and 7'' as well as some part of the 2003 interview... My cousin & I used 'Manbelowunderground' and 'Isillsmokydead' for a Chocaholics mix-cd and they're by far my 2 favourite cuts from them.

RUGGEDRYHUMP - 2003 INTERVIEW FOR WCI

Hi... Who's behind Mystery School? Can you
introduce each member and point everyone's discography?

I am the ruggedryhump. I am a 3rd degree mystery scholar. The Mystery School was founded by Ill Smoky in an unknown time. Here are the current students and projects:

iLL Smoky - 7th degree - Physical Wack CD
Don Brilliante - 5th degree
Chance Brilliante - 5th degree
Hieronymous Kine - 3rd degree - Manwerk E.P 12"
Inaudible - 3rd degree - Manwerk E.P 12"
Ikadry - 3rd degree - Production Tools - 12" and CD
Royal Bloodsman - 3rd degree - Heaven and Hell CD
The Ruggedryhump - 3rd degree - Manwerk EP 12"
                                                     - Smokers Breaks 12"
                                                     - Rat vs Squirrel 12"
                                                     - Fresh ScratchRecord 12"

How do you met each other and decide to do Mystery School? Who's the director of that School?

The Mystery school was brought together by the brothers Don and Chance Brilliante under direction from Ill Smoky. There are 7 known degrees (or levels) of the Mystery School. The higher degree you are, the more information you are given about the origins and teachings of the Mystery school.

You release that Manwerk ep and it seems to have a concept behind this... What the little speech back of the record meant? Where do you get the name 'Manwerk'?

ManWerk was the first in a series of Werk releases. Man refers to ManKind, Humans (men and women) werking together for a common goal. There is too much seperation in the world. We need to put in more werk together instead of against eachother. Real werk, ideas and people cannot be seperated, even in U.S.A. the land of rocket ships.

What are your influences musically and lyrically? Maybe i'm wrong but itfeels sometimes close to the Shapeshifters ...

It changes all the time, but right now I cant stop listening to Dub, King Tubby, Agustus Pablo, it's as organic as music gets. My all timers are people who had abnormal styles like: Alan Lomax, Roland Kirk, Wesley Willis, KraftWerk, Johnny Cash, Jello Biafra, guys like that break the traditional rules, thats what I like. I am a long time listener of the Shape Shifterz, I respect and appreciate all that I've heard from that crew.

Can you tell us more about Subvert Underground Press?

Subvert approached the Mystery School and agreed to put out a series of
projects, they give us full creative control. We have them to thank for the oppurtunity to manufacture the music we have made. Most of the Mystery school projects can be found at their website www.subvertundergroundpress.com

What's the future projects for Mystery School? Any solo albums?

We have recently put out a series of dj Battle/production tool records:
Rat vs. Squirrel; Smokers Breaks; Ikadry  feat. Xololanxinxo (OMD), Tommy V, Hieronymous Kine, Inaudible and more...

And coming soon the new ILL Smoky CD - World War 69 feat. remix by DJ Swamp.

Bay Area Art Collective - B-Sides Demonstrations

Back with a cassette release from 1995. This is the first official album from the Bay Area Art Collective (BAAC). The only info I have on this group is from Discogs: it's a 3 guys band from Berkeley who released a handful of very confidential tapes between 95 and 98.
One member of the band, James Ek-Sel, is also a member of this other confidential westcoast group called All The King's Horses whose only demo cassette from 93 was just released on vinyl by Back 2 Da Source.

About this album now, I don't own a copy myself but found a rip of the full A and B sides that I proceeded to cut into different tracks. I then named the tracks accordingly to the Discogs page, like I did for the Log Cabin tape. Sound is correct. For those wondering why I switched tracks A07 and A09, well the A07 track begin with the rapper saying "Perpendicular Composers" which was supposedly track 9 according to Discogs, so.... Every other track is matching their title.

Enjoy!

Zest The Smoker - The Smoker Filez

The Smoker Filez is a compilation of unreleased works, remastered demos and such from Zest.
31 tracks in total, that's a good dose of dark and minimal San Jose hip hop (although it seems that he lives in Sacramento nowadays). You can recognize reworked versions of old tracks on slsk-floating demos (like 3 Face the Shape Shifter which isn't a real release). Some of the cuts on there are brilliant.. Don't sleep on it.

The Nonce - Unearthed (Private Compilation)

Scrolling through my files recently I stumbled upon that sort of 'private comp' that I named Unearthed.

A few years ago, fellow writer from now-defunct hiphopcore.net Bachir hit me about his forthcoming project. He wanted to do a mixtape dedicated to The Nonce, knew my passion for both that group and the vinyl format and wanted an outside advice about which tracks to select.
My nerdy self promptly made him a two-part compilation collecting on one file all the rap featurings and rarities (i.e. tracks including Sach or Yusef on other albums or comps), and on another file collecting all the additional remixes and productions for other artists I could find from them in my files.

I probably forgot a couple, but it's still a decent collection.
And Bachir's mixtape, "The Only", released in 2010, is a must have if you're a fan of the group.

Subtitle - King Ghost 7''

This is 'the' infamous 24-copy only raer Subtitle clear 7''.
Got mine from Deeskee a few years ago. What you got is a not-so-good rip from my vinyl.
For the rest, let's quote discogs:

Originally it was planned as a single for Subtitle’s first album on GSL, but only 24 copies were made.

Subtitle’s PC crashed and he lost the whole material of the album. That’s why the production of the single was stopped and instead he recorded new tracks, which are the today version of “Always Recovering from Tomorrow”.

This record has a blank yellow label with no information at all about the artist, release year and track titles. The only mark is scratched in the runout groove ('GSLXXX-A' for the a-side and 'GSLXXX-B' for the b-side, respectively).

King Ghost
Deadly Ram Attack

Camp Crystal Lake - The Camp Crypt B-Sidez

Not much is known about that compilation, besides the fact that it's legit (artwork posted on Zest's youtube channel) and, as the subtitle suggest, it's a collection of 4-track and unreleased fillers.
Camp Crystal Lake aka Camp Crypt is the collective created by San Jose's Zest The Smoker in 1996.
The crew got several line-ups (including some Isolated Wax peeps) and it ended with only Zest, Los The Jackal and Wolf Progress.
B-Sidez is the closest to a proper CCL release, even though I never saw an official copy myself (hit me up if you got one!) and features a gang of usual suspects from SJ. Good one.

West Kraven - The Big Worm Series Vol.1

I originally heard about West through a cassette a finnish connection dubbed me years ago.
The album was Universe Horror Nites and I liked it instantly.
I didn't know it as first but I soon discovered he was part of the Masters Of The Universe crew out of San Diego (Orko, Sumach -future Gonjasufi, Odessa Kane, etc.).

U.H.N. sounded super raw, minimal, it had an eerie vibe not unlike the music from my already beloved Orko, Zest or Dave Dub. Reclusive. Straight from the cave if I might say so... kind of like the opposite of what westcoast rap means for most people, but really original and well-crafted even if it was probably made on modest equipment.

I contacted him through his old myspace page and asked if I could buy a copy of his 'Income 12"'.
He agreed and weeks later I received a pretty beat up 12'' copy (straight from the cave indeed) as well as unexpected gifts: 2 cds (a mixtape and  a cd-single) and a XXL shirt from West's label, 4 The Cheese, that made my skinny bones look like it was covered under a gangsta ghost sheet (my cousin got great pics of me in that shirt btw, he keeps them preciously just in case).

The Big Worm doesn't sound anything like the Income 12'' or U.H.N.. Musically it's a 180 degrees shift: exit the eerie vibe, it's now pure gangsta rap with heavy southern rap-inspired beats. I kind of slept on those cds until recently when I found them back in my garage.

Not the best of his work but still an interesting piece for the collectors.

(Still looking for a VG++ to Mint copy of the Income 12'' or 7'' btw)

Point Météo

So, fast forward 4 years later.
Obviously many changes, new city, new life, new machines, lots of tapes and vinyls lost in a bad garage flood 3 years ago.
Still got some good stuff left rap wise, so I decided to give it a try once again. Thanks for the good people that posted they wanted more also.

Let's begin softly with a link to my latest mixes, you will find several selections here including a weird trap one, a super slow agressive one called 6 8 6, one made exclusively off rap tracks that sampled Portishead, one made of golden era french rap and the latest one that I'm reposted here, called Disorientation, a 'selection of raw boom bap', mostly 90es NYC stuff. Hope you'll enjoy.

Expect more stuff soon, obscure westcoast, mixes...
