Darkleaf - Kimetic Principles LP

Long time, no post.
I've been working on this new (vulgar) release for a while: Darkleaf's Kimetic Principles, originally made in 1997, consisting on Longevity + Jahli on production, Kemit on vocals and Marvski on scratches. Deeskee remastered it.
Cawzaone did the artwork (except for the "Leaf man" logo by Era One), Rimrimrim the layout.
There's an insert with a Longevity interview inside.
We had the space for an additional bonus track on side B so we added "Capitol Eye", my favorite track off Kimetic Principles Vol.2.

There's only 150 black copies available here:

Fhraecus - Procrastination

This album is from a San Jose group, they released it in 1999 and it was part of the Atak catalogue back then. I don't know much about it otherwise, it shows on the cover it was produced by Beta Central and the emcees are Beta Central, Aroen, Anouken and Eukalypts.

Elusive - Prototype From A Protoplanet

This is an old beat tape by Elusive from around 97-99.
Dark, jazzy, minimal beats typically in the same fashion of what he released at the time (6 Degrees Of Separation, Deceiving The Right Eye Of Confusion). Great tape for late night sessions, I recommend it.

18 Untitled beats.

Vinyls

Yep, no download this time but a selection of fine articles that just dropped:

First that absolute must-have reissue of Social Deviantz' Essential Mental Nutrients.

I have a long list of fantasy albums-that-need-to-be-issued-on-vinyl-one-day, and if not by other labels, maybe one day by my own... and that canadian classic was definitely in the top 10.
If you don't know about it, let's say it's like an unreleased golden-era Pharcyde LP, nothing less.
Production is top notch, emceeing is fresh, and that album from '96 stayed incredibly overlooked for some reason.
Cope it now, cope 2 copies and say thanks to DWG for putting it out with styles.

Then, another nice reissue from Chicago duo Maintenance Crew. They put out a best-of vinyl compilation for RSD this year, celebrating a career of 14 years and 5 albums. I use to bump a lot their first album when it came out in 2005 and even had a review for a french website. Glad to have some of their titles on wax.

Next up we have Specs One & Silas Blak from Seattle that released a collaborating LP called Blak Wizard. I didn't ordered it yet but it's next in line, since most things released by Specs One is dope, including his recent Unfollow digital EP.

Also, don't forget to peep Luke Sick's 5th, 6th ,7th?? project dropped this year. It's a new Disturbers tape, more like an old one that finally sees the light of day. Megakut needs to start a yearly subscription or something, too much goodness, so little time.

Lastly, I'm proud to announce I have a 50 minutes mix up on big UK radio RinseFM for the LuckyMe show. The date is May 19th, around 11PM I think. I'll repost the thing when it's out as a podcast. Westcoast underground only. Much love to Martyn for the opportunity!

Underbombers / Fanatik bootleg cassettes

A couple of weeks ago 12ManRambo had this ebay auction including a batch of mysterious hand dubbed cassettes full of supposedly unreleased music from San Jose collective Underbombers (Sub Contents, Zest) and producer Fanatik.
I was able to score 3 of those tapes:

"Phanatik Conception" (pic above), contains a lot of known Fanatik instrumentals from the Beat tapes era but this time with MCs on them... I never heard any of those versions (maybe I missed some releases?).
They sound at the same time solid enough to be officially released but you can also hear that it's straight from the studio takes (emcees commenting before and after etc.). Second track for example is Dave Dub over the "Parallel" beat. There's a MC I couldn't name on the first track rapping over "Night Terror"; a nice short collage interlude I never heard; a track with a female singer...
On the B side it's 6 full tracks of known Fanatik beats with Grand the Visitor from Homeliss Derilex rapping on it, and a cameo by Persevere on the last one. Pretty nice!

Second tape is by Zest the Smoker. It features some instrumentals, two versions of My Ol Nasty Habit, one over a different beat than the one we know, and the second one is an alternate vocal take on the original beat. Then Encore's "Think Twice". On the flip there's a 23-minute long freestyle featuring Persevere, Clishe and some other guys I couldn't name. It's called "Freestyle @ Steve's Bachelor Party".

"Subconscience" starts with a freestyle by Dave Dub & Persevere, then some known instrumental by Fanatik, My Ol Nasty Habit by Zest, then more freestyle by some guy I couldn't name, Zest, then some more freestyle by Persevere and finally a radio cameo with an extended freestyle over several instros by both Sub Contents members.

...all 3 tapes ripped:

The Moonies - Invasion

This is the first project from the Bay Area crew The Moonies. I'm not super familiar with Rec League but they're seem to be loosely related to Gurp City and such.
As far as I know that's one of their first official release, it's from 2000. Cumulus (now QM), Rob Rush (named Lexicon on this project?),  Matty Eye, plus Juice and Masie on one track are the MCs on Invasion.
Thanks to K-Pro for hooking up that tape.

In another news, peep the dope new Haez One and Dankslob (Luke Sick & G-Pek) albums.

Cytoplasmz/Psychoplasmz/Cyto-P is this obscure crew from Oakland with a variable line-up (remember this post?) that includes Bas-1 and Lil Larry amongst others.
This is their only collective release, besides the Insiduous Urban 7'', and it's from 96.

Elucid Soulflower - Eternal Balance

5-track EP from christian rapper Elucid Soulflower, released in 1998. I'm not too much into christian rap in general but production & flow are alright here.
Anyone with more info/background about this one is welcome!

Eyedlmode - S/T EP

Eyedlmode was a duo from the Bay comprised of J Def and Rymskeme.
They only released 2 tapes, both in '95: the Fogville album (already posted by Jibs over here, much thanks to him) and this 5-track EP which offers 2 tracks already on the album, one remix and two unreleased tracks including the great "Headsets".
As far as I know all cassette copies from Fogville are hand-dubbed whereas on this EP the tapes are professionally duplicated and have a better sound quality.

If not already done you should absolutely listen to both releases. They got a specific laid back vibe that kind of reminds me of The Nonce, sort of. I play them a lot when I need something to chill to.

Rymskeme also have a demo tape out there that you can find on youtube. If anybody got a proper rip of this or a copy to sell, holla.

Average Joe - S/T

One I've been looking for for a long time: Joe Dub's forgotten solo album as Average Joe (do not mistaken with Average Joe 2000 'Man Or Myth' released years later on Highground).
Like the cover says, it's from 96, and unlike the cover says it's not technically a SFSM album even though some other members appear here and there.
There's a "Humble Foot" logo on the side but it seems to be more a label thing? and not the other hard to find Joe Dub cassette EP (the third one being White Gangster).

Enjoy!

The Basics - Success And You

The Basics were a duo from San Jose comprised of MC Dem One and DJ Worldwise, both of them were featured on the SJ comp I posted a while ago, "Outerbodied".
This EP from 1999 is kind of laidback with some nice instrumental/scratching tracks on each side. Style Misia from Gypsy Cab/ New Moon/ etc. produced most of it. DJ Sonic makes an apparition.
Don't know if they released something else as The Basics. Dem One released a batch of solo releases ever since. Worth checking!

Sleepwalkers - Despair

I bought that tape by sheer curiosity, only knowing it was part of the Atak catalogue back then.
Funny to see how the darker-than-thou/ depressive/ nihilistic aesthetic was pushed to the max on this one: somber productions? Check. Melancholic violins? Check. Someone whispering "the horror" at the end of the intro? Check. Kierkegaard quotes in the liner notes? You betcha. Tracks names including "I Hate Myself", "Despair" or "Divorce From Reality?" Hell yeah!

All jokes aside, the quality of the tracks are pretty uneven, but special mention to the less-serious ones: the hidden track on side A which is completely freestyled for instance. Or the ironic "Surfing", which kind of counterbalance some other more serious, self-loathing tracks that didn't aged well.

VA - Broke Ass Summer Jam III - 98 Sampler

That cassette sampler was supposed to promote the Broke Ass Summer Jam hip hop festival build by and for (but not only) Living Legends members in 1998.
It features mostly already known singles from various LL related releases but also a couple of unreleased songs, live extracts and interludes I think.
Something for the LL completists really, and I think it was on Jibs wishlist too.

Also, I wanted to present another interesting blog I discovered a few weeks ago.
Record Recollection highlights late 90es canadian indie rap releases with indepth interviews from the artists themselves. A deep source of knowledge if you're into this.

Sanuhtayshun Duhpartment Muzik - S/T

SDM is a 5-guys group (see artwork above for members name) from Oakland who only released one single in 1997 in both cassette and vinyl formats. That's pretty much all the info available for this one.

In another news I strongly recommend this new blog by Trylemma and his pal, named Underground Fossils and which already shared a pretty rare piece in Subtitle's HTBTB 01.872 cassette.
There's other good stuff too.

Kayer re-released his debut cassette with DJ Void on the super dope Sublevel Epidemic imprint.

The seminal Seattle compilation Do The Math will exist on double vinyl pretty soon, thanks to Back 2 Da Source. Untranslated Prescription should be next!

HHV continues to reissue The Grouch's complete backcatalogue on color vinyls. After albums 1 and 2, here's albums 3 and 4.

Finally, there's 2 more vinyl releases in the works for (vulgar), hopefully out this year.
Meanwhile: https://vulgar.bandcamp.com
