The Jedeyes - It's Not What You Think !!!

Another rare one, asked by Apo. Very limited info on this one.
The Jedeyes were a duo from LA comprised of Tate The Great and Yota One, it's from 1997.
It's their first album, and their second one, Experiment 31, is vinyl only.
Tate was also part of supergroup Community Service, with LMNO and Zaire Black amongst others.
Yota One is also part of Kosmic Four.
I really like 'We're Running This' and used it in the recent Westakoasta Vol.2 mixtape.

Enjoy!

Elusive - Prototype II + Origin Void

Those are rare (elusive?) tapes by Elusive that I was chasing for years and that the homie Chris sent me recently... not E's best tapes but when you're a completist, you're always happy to feel like a specific part of your quest is over. They're both from 1998, with untitled beats (no featurings) and sold at shows and on the old school llcrew website.

Enjoy!

Darkleaf - Kimetic Principles LP

Long time, no post.
I've been working on this new (vulgar) release for a while: Darkleaf's Kimetic Principles, originally made in 1997, consisting on Longevity + Jahli on production, Kemit on vocals and Marvski on scratches. Deeskee remastered it.
Cawzaone did the artwork (except for the "Leaf man" logo by Era One), Rimrimrim the layout.
There's an insert with a Longevity interview inside.
We had the space for an additional bonus track on side B so we added "Capitol Eye", my favorite track off Kimetic Principles Vol.2.

There's only 150 black copies available here:

Elusive - Prototype From A Protoplanet

This is an old beat tape by Elusive from around 97-99.
Dark, jazzy, minimal beats typically in the same fashion of what he released at the time (6 Degrees Of Separation, Deceiving The Right Eye Of Confusion). Great tape for late night sessions, I recommend it.

18 Untitled beats.

OD And Ebow - Beat Stampeed 2

This is a beat tape from 1995 made by two great producers, Omid (Beneath The Surface) and Ebow (CVE, Legion). It's only 6 beats total but it's a nice little release to listen and zone to and quite a hard to find one as well.

Here

The Library Crew - Bibliotechnitians Vol.1

This is the Library Crew cassette, an old project from 1997 that consisted of Subtitle, Memorex, Premonition and the Lexicon guys.
Here's What Subtitle said about it in an interview for Hiphopcore.net a few years ago:

"That started when we were in high school. That was Lexicon (which is Oak and Nick Fury), Number Crunchers (myself and DJ Memorex), Premonition, Dramatic, Recon and this dude C-Trouble, whom I think he's doing porn or something right now. There was also lots of friends walking in and out of the group… But it all started when we were in Oxnard and every Friday we'd all go to Santa Barbara to freestyle on Mums The Word's show. He had this show at this radio station at the UCSB (the Santa Barbara college) that everybody went to, like the Project Blowed, KanKick, CDP and all those dudes… We would all roll out there, we were all real young and we all ended up meeting up. We kicked it a little bit and got along so we did songs and ended up calling ourself a crew. I had the name in my head 'cause I worked at the library at my high school at the time so I said : "Let's just call it the Library crew". We made a cassette "Bibliotechnicians Vol. 1" in 1997.

There was also a group in the Library called Rector Set, that was me and Scribble, but we never recorded any song because Scribble was a dick head at the time. Matter of fact, when we did "Bibliotechnicians", we had left him, we didn't even tell him we were going to record the project… which is some dick-head-shit. I just called him when I got home to play him some songs over the phone and he just hung up on my face of course. Library went on about 3 years. We did some shows and were going to work on more material but then everybody started moving further away… I moved out to L.A., Lexicon moved out to L.A., Premonition and Dramatic would come to hang out but you wouldn't hear from the other dudes. Memorex moved out to L.A. and we would hang out a bit but he was doing other stuff, he wasn't deejaying as much. "

The Jedeyes - Experiment 31

Another rather confidential group from LA.

They share a member in Yota One with Kosmic Four. The rest of the crew member list is rather vague: depending on if you check this vinyl LP or their other release, the "It's Not What You Think!!!" cassette, there's a bunch of Star Wars-derivative pseudos mentioned as part of the group, and it's different on each album... so, hard to tell who are the Jedeyes really.

Both albums share a couple of tracks, although the vinyl is not just a selection from the longer cassette, it has some unreleased tracks as well, such as the opener "Jedeye Philosophy".

Musically the album is rather refreshing, jumping from classic straight boom bap numbers to a couple of more experimental tracks here and there and a large array of influences (dub, Sun Ra...). There's something for everyone in there. Have a listen!

Richport The Savior - Type Of Shit I'm On Vol.1 'Through Crookid Eyes'

"From the KPs vaults vol.48": today, Richport The Savior's Type Of Shit I'm On Vol.1!
Released in 2005 on Emmoworks, which is the label that released most of Zaire Black & June22's work (also Ras Ceylon's stuff and the Youth Internationals 12'' I've posted a while ago).

The album, entirely produced by Richport and June22, is pretty long (28 tracks!) but got a couple of nice tracks, despite the rawness of the sound quality.
There's a 7'' that includes two of the tracks in it also.

In another news Beetbak got that dope cassette reissue of the underrated masterpiece that is Inoe One's Master Relm out with a bonus track and additional liner notes, so it should be on top of your wishlist for the new year.

There's an unearthed The Nonce album planned to be released on Family Groove for 2018 and called "1990", no need to say much, my money is already saved for that one (check their instagram).

Snuf One aka Age, the guy responsible for the dope Raised by Seuss album reissue on his Untek Rec label recently discovered a batch of unsold stock of his 1997 "Simpleton" beat tape and it's pretty dope. Each artwork is unique apparently, and stock is hella limited.

That's it for the indie rap consumer minute.

VA - Project Blowed (1994 OG Tape Version)

It's the first version of the classic Blowed Compilation reissued a year later with a slighly modified tracklist. I read only a few of these has been made, not sure how much, and it was all cassette.

So, is it that special? Well, if you have a fetish for cool objects I'd say yes. This original artwork with a flap and cool b&w photo montage is way better than the rather dull artwork of the reissue in my opinion. The tracklist on the flip got a cool retro feel with slightly different names (introducing The "Nonces" and their hit "Them Tapes"; Dolla Holla was called Section 8 but it's the same track; Aceyalone found 4 different ways to spell his rap name; etc.)

And musically wise? Well, not that special actually. Here's the differences: you got a (not that great) track by Lil Juggsta, "All Balls Don't Bounce" replace "I Don't Know". A track off ATU's Mood Pieces is there instead of the DK Toon joint, "Treble and Bass" is not there, but instead you got a handful of intro/outros and skits including a short instro by CVE called "Feels". It's nice, but nothing too crazy. Otherwise, all the versions of the tracks are pretty much the same than the ones on the reissue.

So there you go, in any case it's still great to bump this essential piece of music once again.

Ill Nature - Life Line In The Hands Of Time

This album from 1998 has been brought to my attention by Kaliyuga Pro.
He bought it a few years ago on ATAK not knowing much about that crew, except that they were from California. The list of the members doesn't give much clues either: Ill Nature is Serge The Wrecknition, M.E.R.C.U.R.Y. (no relation to Sunset Leagues I think), Maximum Styles and depending on the cd booklet: L-Element and Concept, and on discogs: Sovereign and Elly Estro.
There's also a bunch of featurings by various mc's I never heard of that seemed to be grouped under the name The I.S. Chapter. The production is handled by Serge The Wrecknition, The Butter Thief and Concept.

The music is pretty good, it's actually a surprise it didn't get any more attention, probably lost in the ocean of releases at that time. A vinyl version of this exist, you can found it easily on discogs although they tend to be a little pricey.
It's about time people check this album!

Western Union - Off With Their Heads

This cassette is from 1996, from a California crew called Western Union.
From what I get the WU later became Dojo Pros (producer Asterix aka Sueno One plus mcs L.O.R.D. and Wu Shu -same guy as Contakt?). Pretty straight forward hardcore hip hop with nice uptempo prods, definitely something to check.

In a related subject I'm looking for anything WU/Dojo Pros related, their Look Out 12'', L.O.R.D. solo albums and singles, etc. Don't hesitate to hit the comment section with links if you have some. Thanks.

ParanormL - The Paranorml Sickayatrist EP

ParanormL is a MC from Los Angeles. This EP, released in 2000, is his first one.
This is pretty much my favourite thing from him, particularly because of the dope productions by The Nutsons, a beatmaking duo from Norway that handled all the beats and released the EP on their Warm Gravy label.
ParanormL later developped a more jazz-oriented sound but this is more straight-forward, eerie and aggressive hip hop. You even got Vex from The Boogie Monsters on the first track.
The 4 tracks (plus one little instrumental hidden at the end) are equally good, I'm even surprise this piece of wax isn't more sought after.
I ripped my copy since I couldn't find one. Enjoy!

Looking for that Anacron 12''

This is my "Moby Dick" item, the one you're chasing year after year, trying to collect info while barely making any progress and dreaming you'll stumble upon it by complete luck.

This is Anacron's very first single: Out There b/w Interstellar Phenomenon.
He made a digital re-release on his bandcamp a couple of years ago and it mentioned a vinyl version existed. I'm collecting westcoast undergound vinyls for years and never even heard of that one, no need to say I was hyped!
But after a few months, still nothing, not even a picture or somebody mentioning it, nothing even proving it was once sold or being part of someone's collection!
I asked Anacron on twitter and he confirmed: 350 copies were pressed in 1995 and everything was hand sold, mostly in Europe and Japan! 350... It's not huge but it's not nothing either. How come nobody seems to own this?

So here's my call: if you have any info, picture, whatever, you own one, you know someone who owns one or did, you ever saw a copy in a shop, or even better, you're willing to sell one to me for whatever price... please hit that comment section.

VA - Please Pass The Mic...

Way before the Project Blowed compilation (1995) or Beneath The Surface (1998), here's "Please Pass The Mic..." a cassette-only compilation that gathered the cream of the LA underground MCs in 1992.
Given the few hints behind this project -the mysterious Under-Ground Music Company label that only released this thing for instance- it's hard to know who came up with this project really.

But it features a few usual suspects from this area, including the Unity Comittee (future Jurassic 5 and Darkleaf), Big Al (that guy from the This Is The Life documentary?), Foesum under their old Perfection moniker, Trensetta as Funky Trend who questions what colors left to wear when you live in LA in 92, Snoop Dogg and of course Volume 10 who offers an interesting pre-album version of Sho Is Hype.

Obviously the vibe is more about g-funk and gangsta rap than the Blowed comps, but it's still a nice glimpse into what was the scene like back then.

PERFECTION ft. SNOOP DOGGY DOG - Understand Perfection
UNITY COMMITTEE - Who's Gonna Be The Next Victim
MISTER CIX - 6 In The Clip
PERFECTION - Mack Thang
DED 2 THE WORLD - The Hoes That Won't Dance
MAC-10 - Dungeons & Dragons
BIG AL - Get On The Ride
FUNKY TREND - (Tell Me) What Colors Can I Be Wearin'
SUPERB SK & UNITY COMMITTEE - The Fish Taste Superb
QWYET STORM - Spare The Rod (Spoil The Child)
GP HIP HOP NATION - Is It Good 2 U?
CHOCOLATE TAI - Can I Kill It
VOLUME 10 - Sho Is Hype (But Not My Type)

In another news, Please check the excellent Kemetic Suns post over at Thisisforthehustlers, which features Karma's view over the KS years as well as an unreleased -and great- Ka Auditron Ba album on soundcloud. I wish more artists would come up with articles like that.

Although Jibs over at thisisforthehustlers came up with the ultimate Rob One post, here's my small contribution.
And yes, it's still part of the dude-who-added-great-quality-digital-transfer-with-OG-cassettes file.

I noticed a similar item on said post above, called "Best Of Fly ID Show 1990", it turns out to be a slightly different version with different art cover
This one is 2 hours long (the other one 1 hour) and a better quality rip.
Worth noticing: a Beastie Boys freestyle from '92 (!). Yes.

Imprints - Dust Collector + 2003 Interview

Remember when I told you about that guy on ebay who added a clean digital transfer cd with every OG cassette you were purchasing from him?
Here's another item I bought from him, Tommy V's first album under the Imprints moniker.

Now I don't usually repost stuff that's already posted somewhere else but this one got a way better sound that the previous one floating at 56kbps.

Also, it just made me remember that I interviewed TV a few years ago (13 years actually) for WCI, through emails. I edited a good portion of it and kept the most informative parts. Hope you'll enjoy.

Tommy V / 2003 Interview for Westcoastindies

Can you tell us about your childhood? Where did you grow up?

Ok well me and my lil' brother Antonio were born at Queen of Angels Hospital in LA, my mother (RIP) was from Montana and my father is from Mexico. When we were  youngsters my mom wanted to leave LA (Mid-Wilshire area) and move back to Kalispell, Montana, where she was from. So there we were in good ol' Montana, soon after my parents got divorced, pops went back to LA and moms stayed in Montana.
From then on I lived back n' forth from Montana to California, my pops then moved back to Mexico so a few times I went to live in Patzcuaro, Michoacan, Mexico.. I've also lived in San Francisco, Portland, and Seattle...

How about your beginnings in hip hop? What was the LA scene looking like at that time?

Back in the 5th grade I started getting into Hip-Hop, I had a friend named Chris aka Killa C and we used to make up raps about random nonsense and breakdance for school plays and stuff, we were always doing music related things.
Then later on in my teen-age years I met my homie Steven Gomez aka Destruct 310 (RIP). One day in Montana I saw these 2 Mexican cats wearing LA hats (Mario and Steven), this was a rare thing in Montana which is mostly white people, so I approached them and asked where they were from, it turned out they had just moved from Whittier, California, that was the city where my dad lived at the time, so it was dope to meet some heads from LA and we became best friends.
We started our crew "Imprints". Destruct was a good musician who could play drums, keys, and also he was dope at beatboxing, we use to battle each other, he was really witty and good at bagging on people, then his brother Mario aka Slopoke used to rhyme too, then there was DJ Shroom who was their cousin that was a DJ. So we used to take the Amtrak back and forth from Montana to LA.
While living in Whittier around 1995 I became friends with Awol One, me and Destruct had an apartment in Uptown Whittier with his big sister Angie (who sang on "Ma' Despacio" on Quarter Life Crisis). We used to hop on the bus down Whittier Blvd. and go to Awols house with records and drum machines etc.. We would make beats and freestyle and whatnot. One of the beats that we made together came out on Quarter Life Crisis.
About this time there was an event called "The Brainfish" that happened every full moon at a warehouse in Santa Fe Springs, this is where you could find Awol on the mic, I remember Circus used to be there with really long dreaded hair, then there was the Endangered Element crew who I used to battle but later on we became homies thru Awol, also this tagging crew known as LSD used to hang out there. I never went to the Good Life or Project Blowed back then.
Around this time my mother was diagnosed with brain cancer, this was a wack time in my family's life, she lost her battle with cancer in 1996. Then tragically a year after Destruct was killed in a head on collision. This was devastating because he was so young and full of life, if he was still here you would definitely know of him in the LA underground. He was my best friend and I carry on his legacy through my music, along with my mothers..

I'm not really a full time rapper because I don't really consider myself to be a very good rapper, but I am a full time musician, everyday I work on music in one way or another. We had an old Hammond Organ in our house when I was a kid and my mom used to play everyday, she knew how to read music.
I never learned how to read the notes but I always took interest. Now I carry around a pocket recorder that I use to capture melodies in my head, then I try to bring them to life later on in the studio... But for the most part Hip-Hop was my introduction to the music world and that's how I started off in music. Our 1st song was recorded in 1994 with Destruct, but that tape has since been lost..

You used to call yourself "Imprints", now Tommy V... Why that change?

Well "Imprints" was our name back before we even recorded songs and just freestyled amongst each other. After Destruct passed on the vision kind of died, but I still carry the name for his sake and probably always will, "Tommy V." is a name that is just a breakdown of my real name which is Thomas Valencia...

Can you talk about your Fresh Produce album?

Yeah well I got tired of sampling music and wanted to make my own music. I began hanging out with more music type heads like my homie Devin17 who plays all kinds of instruments, then you got the homies from "Anonymous Inc" who play out all their music so all of this was inspiring and influential to me.
I was living with Xololanxinxo and 2Mex at the time that "Fresh Produce" was recorded, Xolo has a big collection of instruments and I began picking up guitars and messing with keyboards, trying to play flutes, clarinets, horns, whatever I could get my hands on. I got more pleasure out of making an original song from the ground up as opposed to sampling..

What's your process to make a song?

As far as music goes, usually a melody pops in my head, then I record it to my pocket recorder. This melody might be words or a phrase or might just be sounds. Then I go to the guitar or piano and try to bring it to life, or sometimes just messing around with some instruments a nice line will surface and will turn into a song. I usually have a concept that I'd like to work with, then it's just a matter of time to see if it fits with a certain piece of music or vice versa...
I like short story writing, so sometimes you'll hear little stories in my songs...

I know you were part of The Evil Cow Burger album with Awol. Can you talk about these sessions?

Well Awol used to live on Colima in Whittier, he had a 4-track, a sampler, some 1200's and a bunch of crates of records and this old Shure SM-58 mic. We recorded those songs in his room, nothing like some gritty 4 track recording! Ask him and Circus about the time I was recording and I had this really bad sun burn, I was breaking out in cold sweats!

Gershwin BLX - Nocturnal Ron Presents Gershwin 12''

This one is the first piece of vinyl by LA crew Bassline Xcursionists aka Gershwin BLX. I must admit I don't know much about the producer Nocturnal Ron, not even which year he released this. It seemed to be complete auto-production.
It's a pretty solid 4-track 12'', with "Rhymes / Riddles" being the highlight with it's infectious beat and chorus.

If you like it you should check BLX's first album, originally a cassette-only release (95-97 era) but put as a free download on their Bandcamp.

As far as BLX's solo joints I also own two 12"s by Omni that I really like and might put them out there one of these days.
I also recently checked on Malkovich's other projects and really liked his Skeletons album (free DL as well) among others.
